Skate and fashion: introducing Leila Afghan's photoshoot in London with skatebaorder @queeen_eevee

Leila once again captures the Volcom vibe in the streets of one of the most influencial capitals, London. @queeen_eve highlights some of our winter jackets and iconic Ozzie Wright's printed t shirts in her own style Check out her interview: Your favourite spot to skate? SouthBank - There's always something different going on Where was the first place you skated? Mile End Skate park. I remember passing the skate park and bare wanted to skate so my dad got me one of them Argos decks and I went with him and taught myself. Where is the last place you skated? Bay 66. But I didnt really skate it because on the way I tried bombing some fat steep hill and ate the most shit, that's the same day  broke my leg. How many bones have you broken? I broke like 3 bones in my leg but I cant remember which ones. Tell us about your injury... I dont remember how I broke them because I was drunk. I ended up going to a friends house and sleeping it off but in the morning it was soooo swollen. I couldnt move it so was time for hospital. Best thing about skating... You can have fun without having to pay for anything Worst thing about skating... There's nothing really bad about skating except when guards try and stop you from skating a spot and when it rains.

LONDON PHOTOGRAPHER LEILA AFGHAN IN NYC WITH SKATE GIRLS BRIANA AND YASMEEN

We were fortunate enough to sit with the 3 coolest chicks we know and ask them about everything skate. If you don’t know them already, you will. London based photographer (@leilaafghan), New York skater and model Briana King (@brianaking_) and Brooklyn babe Yasmeen Wilkerson (@yaz.so.mean) strutted their stuff in front of the camera and gave us some insight into their world. Leila, what's your favorite type of photography style and atmosphere to shoot? LEILA: I like weird and surreal - I shoot digital and film, but prefer the dreamy effect with film. When did you start taking skate pics and what took you there? LEILA: I started in fashion styling and photography, but am now progressing and combining documentary style, hence, taking pictures of me and my friends. Where is your favorite spot to shoot skate? LEILA: New York. Favorite spot to skate? YASMEEN: My favorite spot to skate is something new I've been fucking with called Delancey spot or BOCA LES spot. Its a walkway near the Willy B Bridge in Manhattan with a cement block, benches, curbs and other diy stuff. BRIANA: Coleman skate park. Where is the first place you skated? YASMEEN: The first place I skated was an empty parking lot by my house. I was too intimidated to skate in the open as I do now, and I barely knew how to push so I would take my board out there and try to ollie and get comfortable. BRIANA: Out front of the apartment. Where was the last place you skated? YASMEEN: LES skate park is the last place I skated. BRIANA: Blue Park Brooklyn. How many bones have you broken? BRIANA: 1 ankle. I attempted to ollie over 4 decks in front of a four stair, rolled my ankle, broke it, and couldn't trick or treat that night with my newly broken ankle. YASMEEN: My wrist (Smith fracture). Best thing about skating? YASMEEN: Best thing about skating is everything about it. The little lessons it gives you in humility, confidence, and persistence. Skateboarding taught me that strength isn't always physical. BRIANA: The homies! If I didn't skateboard I would be a lonely bub in NYC. And the worst thing about skating? BRIANA: There is no worst thing. YASMEEN: The fuck boys. ALL PHOTOS BY LEILA AFGHAN

Volcom Family Finals: Coco Ho & Maud Le Car

Volcom’s World Tour competitor Coco Ho and French competition surfer Maud Le Car are paralleling leaving disappointment behind they have both individually found their stride. Coco began to turn her season around at the Supergirl Pro, then solidified her strength in front of the whole world with a 3rd place finish at the US Open of Surfing just weeks ago. At the same Open event, Maud knocked out favored 3x World Championship surfer Stephanie Gilmore. Then here in Anglet again showed no mercy eliminating local hero Pauline Ado in the semis; to meet Coco Ho fellow Volcom team rider in the finals. The final heat didn’t offer the most wave opportunity; no stranger to these kind of tough situations Coco Ho took the win taking a shot at every wave the poor surf conditions had to offer. Congratulations to both our girls finishing #1 & #2 in France.

At the Skate Park with Lucie Curutchet

A true blessing in life is when you get to do what you love for a living, and here at Volcom, we'd say that's the case for all of us. Action sports lovers from all over the map, including skateboarding, surfing and snowboarding, get to come together and work for a company we all believe in. And more often than not, those work days come with perks such as taking a day trip to Mammoth to snowboard or hopping on a plane to Hawaii to photograph one of our professional surfers. In Lucie Curuchet's case, shredding the skatepark sometimes falls under "work." Lucie is part of our marketing team in France and lives and breathes the embodiment of the Volcom Stone. She has shown true dedication to her work, as well as her passion for skating. Read below to get to know a little more about Lucie, and keep up with all of her latest adventures on Instagram: @lucie_curutchet. All photos by Claudia Lederer for Panic Magazine, give her a follow on Instagram: @claudia_ldr   Tell us a little about yourself! My name is Lucie Curutchet and I was born in Bayonne, Basque country (SW, France). I went to school and music conservatory in Bayonne before leaving to Toulouse, TBS (Toulouse Business School) for my studies. During a four year span, I lived in Belgium, Spain and Mexico either for work internships or part of a student exchange program. I came back home almost three years ago to work for Volcom, and have been here ever since.   What do you do at Volcom? I am in charge of the Digital Marketing in Europe. Basically, how to promote the brand on the web through social, online contests, influencers, and partnerships with media outlets.   How long have you been skating? Is this a side hobby or your true passion? I had my first street skateboard when I was eight years old, and spent years playing in my neighborhood without really going to any skateparks. I had only been to parks a few times with my mum, but didn’t dare try as it was always full of older guys with a pretty good level of expertise. When I was living in big cities during my studies, my bike cruiser was my means of getting around. I loved riding across the city streets, way more fun than the subway. Skating has always been a true passion, but I never really had the chance to practice proper tricks in ramps or obstacles before joining Volcom. I have been skating the Volcom park for nearly three years now, and I've learned a few things, but still need to improve a lot!   What is your ideal outfit to skate in? My ideal outfit is a Volcom black stretch denim, perfect to feel really comfortable. As a top, I don’t really mind, as long as it’s not too short. I am always wearing authentic Vans (high or low) or slip ons.   What’s your favorite piece from the VOLCOM x GMJ collection? I like wearing the white GMJ Tee, but I would say my favorite one is the GMJ Raglan. I really love the vintage and street wear inspiration.   Do you have any advice for girls who’d like to start skateboarding, but are afraid to try? First, go buy protective pads and a helmet. Ok, it’s ugly, not really fashion and no skaters are wearing them, but it would be the best solution if you don’t want my full-of-bruises and scratched legs. When you first try, you may spend more time on the ground. Then I would say, don’t be ashamed. No one is judging you and it’s never too late to start!   SHOP LUCIE'S LOOK! Volcom Welcomes Hailey Langland to Global Snow Team
Hailey Langland has been making a name for herself since she started snowboarding at age five. She exists in changing time zones, her passport stamped with groomer laps, take-offs and landings. She's got a front three that floats for days and radiates a style that's beyond her years. She grew up paddling into waves and pushing down streets in beachside San Clemente, CA. She first made turns at Bear Mountain and now calls Mammoth’s Main Park home, both proving grounds for sovereign snowboarders. She's fluid and explosive. She has a method that turns heads. It's the kind of kick-out that can't be learned. It's built-in from birth, harkening the past that's built for the future. We can't be more excited to welcome Hailey to the Volcom Family. She brings an impressive past, a promising future, and an unmatched personality which radiates passion and perseverance. While she joins us now, she has always been destined to the Stone. It was only a matter of time for the stars to align, and that time is now. Hailey Langland. Photo: Mike Pham // @phamuel "I'm psyched to be joining the Volcom Family! It's a dream come true to be part of a family that's much bigger than just snowboarding. I can't wait to see where this journey takes me." Hailey’s collection of heavy medals is already plush, though she’s truly just getting started. She landed a first-ever cab double ten in the 2017 X Games and earned her first Aspen gold. See? Just getting started. She’s logged time on podiums around the world. Slopestyle? Check. Big Air? Check. Three years in a row, she’s won the Drink Water Rat Race—a banked slalom where just getting to the bottom is a victory. And Hailey’s been the fastest. Three times. She’s the future of women’s slopestyle, yet her ease and authority with which she puts down tricks stretches far beyond contest boundaries. She’s the future of women’s snowboarding. Scratch that. She’s the future of snowboarding. Hailey wearing the Taylor Jacket (available in 3 colorways). Photo: Vernon Deck // @vernondeck Hailey's energy and style are pure Volcom. I’m super hyped on what she brings to the program. She's got full approval from the team. It's on!!!" -Remy Stratton, SVP Global Skate & Snow Hailey is serious about style and truly loves to ride. It's visible in every turn she makes, every slash, and every air she attempts. It's not fabricated. It's natural. Established at a very young age. At only seventeen, she's both a beacon to snowboarding's roots and a flare to the future, lighting up what's possible when talent, grit, and creativity are fused together. She says, "I cannot stress it enough how much style matters. We're all becoming robots out there, it's driving me freakin' nuts." Hailey on a recent trip in Saas'Fee, a resort village in the Swiss Alps. She has been True To This since she first stood sideways, but now, with the nourishment of the Stone, she can further feed her freedom of expression, and we are so stoked to welcome her to the family.

Post Heat Interviews – Day 2 US Open of Surfing Huntington Beach
The US Open of Surfing has landed in Huntington Beach, CA, and the waves are firing! The Volcom crew, including Team Manager and Coach, Matt "Bemmy" Bemrose, has been down on the beach every day watching our team riders surf their way through heats and rooting them on from the stands. Yesterday, we sat down with Bemmy to get some insight on what it takes to work with some of the world's top female surfers, differences between coaching women's surfing vs. men's surfing, and more. With Maud Le Car's big win yesterday against 6x World Champ, Stephanie Gilmore, and Coco Ho advancing to the quarterfinals (beating current World Champ, Tyler Wright), it's safe say Bemmy's on a good roll! How long have you been with Volcom I started surfing for Volcom when I was 17, then started working for Volcom full-time at 28. I’m 39 now, so about 23 years haha! When did you start working with Coco Ho and Maud Le Car? The first trip I did with Coco was in 2007 to Fiji. I wasn’t working directly with her then, but earmarked her as a future star. Actually, working directly with Coco, that began in 2012. Working with Maud has been on and off over the last two years, but if I get an opportunity to work with her at an event I’m all over it. Maud, Bemmy, and Coco celebrating after Maud's huge win over Steph Gilmore. Who was the first female surfer to ever impress you? Lisa Anderson. She really brought style into women's surfing. Is there a different approach you take when working with female surfers? A little more attention to detail. Things like: where to paddle out, setting lineups, holding priority, etc. More technical things, but women's surfing has come a long way and I've been really impressed with how Coco and Maud have handled the pressure of competition in and out of the water. Coco Ho How do you recognize a potential star athlete and what are some signs of a true competitor? A never-give-up attitude is the biggest telltale sign. Also, a true competitor shows signs of composure under pressure at an early age. Coco Ho mentally preparing before her heat. Outside competition, what are some signs of true surf talent vs. what can be taught in the water? A willingness to think outside the box and apply new maneuvers to your repertoire in a short amount of time shows true surf talent. How much of your job is life coach vs. surf coach? 50/50 for sure. Probably more life coach though haha! Maud Le Car greeted by boyfriend, Joan Duru, after her win against Steph. The US Open is a mad house full of people, competitors, fans, and brands to name a few. What can an event like this do for an up-and-coming surfer? Compete well and it can make you. For Maud, I guarantee this heat win against Steph Gilmore is the biggest confidence boost she’s ever had. With confidence comes self-belief. That’s all someone needs to take their surfing to the next level. Coco Ho has made her name on the scene and has done well at the US Open in past years, and she's just getting fired up! Maud Le Car qualified for this event through the trials, only to take out 6x World Champ Steph Gilmore in her Round 2 heat. How does that happen? What does it take, and do you think she'll be taking down bigger names in the future? What Maud just accomplished was outstanding. Beating one of the best female surfers ever in a CT event as a wildcard is hard to describe. It’s totally amazing in saying that Maud had the ability and firepower to beat Steph. We spoke all day long before her heat and worked out a tight heat strategy. We had Maud focus on her strengths with the mindset that any heat would be hers to win. When she matched up with Steph, it was business as usual. We spoke about controlling the heat from the start and sticking to her game plan, and that's exactly what she did. This win is life-changing and now Maud knows she has what it takes to mix it with the very best in the world. Coco Ho after her win this morning against current World Champ, Tyler Wright. All smiles!

Last night was the VOLCOM x GMJ Collection launch party at START Los Angeles.  We spent many months planning this event and we can't believe that it's over! As the sun started setting, crowds quickly started forming a line around the block. The energy was contagious and we knew it was going to be an unforgettable night. The crowd was bigger than we could ever imagine and we couldn't be happier about it. Every corner of the lot was utilized to entertain our guests in the best way possible. We set up custom screen printing on site with our GMJ Raglan Tees. We had a mobile Photo Booth were people could take pictures anywhere they pleased. There was a pop up shop available for guests to shop the collection right then and there. The live art battle between the talented Natasha Lillipore and Jillian Evelyn was something we'll never forget! The A-list entertainment kept guests dancing throughout the night courtesy of Georgia's boyfriend DJ Josh Ludlow & her best friend DJ Alexandra Richards. The band Deep Vally stole the show with their amazing live performance.
