Scoring in Coxos, Portugal, Euro Thrash continues...

Words and photos by Volcom staff photographer, Tom Carey. Check out additional Euro Thrash coverage from our friends Wasted Talent and Surfline who joined us on the trip.

The second day of the trip was one of the best days of surf we've ever seen. We scored firing Coxos, The Cave and Crazy Left. The wind cooperated, the swell pumped and we took advantage of what Portugal was delivering. Coxos was going loony as our cavalry pulled up to the carpark. Charly Quivront, Alex Botelho and Willy Alioti wasted no time trading off eight foot tubes out the back while Noa Deane jumped in shortly after. Everyone seemed to get spit out of a barrel. It was crazy. But in the distance, we could see The Cave trying to do its thing. The tide just needed to drop. Gony Zubizaretta and myself were getting antsy to give it a whirl, so we waited. And we're glad we did.

Gony put on an absolute amazing display of surfing at The Cave when it started to turn on. Gony is somewhat of a new residenta of Ericeira, but he surfed the wave like he grew up there. For anyone that doesn't know the place, it's as heavy as it gets. Boils pop up out of nowhere, rocks are visible just feet from the lip and a nasty shelf sits just feet away from a wipeout. Tiago Pires once broke his back out there. It's usually empty as no one wants a piece of it. But Gony lit the place up. He got three of the best waves we've ever seen out there. His first wave was a standup barrel wide enough for him to comfortably stretch his arms out in. Noa was also frothing to surf The Cave more than anyone and it showed as he got a few insane slabs to himself along with Gony.

Ryan Burch was also amongst the crew and surfed six-to-eight-foot crazy left by himself for a few hours, carving the wave to hell on his handshaped asymmetrical masterpiece. It's seriously a sight to see him on those boards and it's safe to say he's carved out a nice little niche for himself.

Even after a terribly long day of surfing, we still managed to find the strength to put a few beers back. The days are quite long in Europe. We didn’t even eat dinner until 10:30pm that night. The Americans were getting hangry and all the Euros were having a good laugh at it.

The following day was back to the beach break. And again, we were greeted with playful three-foot surf rolling off this amazing sand bar. It was icing on the cake after the extravaganza we had the day before. We could die happy. The forecast looked pretty grim after that run of swell, so we decided to pack up our gear and hightail it 10 hours to Hossegor. We went like 90mph and made it in seven hours. Not an easy task with three cars. We strolled into the Volcom France House around 10pm and called it a day.

Noa Deane's "Head Noise" is a Cinematic Surf Movie from Filmmaker Mikey Mallalieu
Demystifying the noise within his own head and destroying the noise of the stereotype which surrounds him. Yes, Noa Deane is a freakish aerialist, but he also charges tubes of consequence. Yes, he is one of the most innovative surfers in the world today, but he is also steeped in a deep respect for his heritage. Yes, he has been characterized as a punk kid, but he is thoughtful and down to earth. Yes, his life might look like an easy dream ride, but he has demons to slay! This movie is a direct reflection of Noa Deane. It's a candid look at one of surfing's most exciting characters through high-action, heavy-charging, avant-garde surfing for the new age, documented unmistakably through the lens of filmmaker Mikey Mallalieu. WÖRGL DIY OPENING PRESENTED BY VOLCOM
In a small town called Wörgl, located in the tyrol alps between the riptide of the Inn and landscapes that spreads subtle vibes as soon as you cross the border, you will find a handcrafted skatepark being one of the best in its field. A DIY project that got triggered by Roman “Asti” Astleitner & Marco owner of the local skate shop Pilotto and which is now – after 13 years of construction – one of the most stunning, fun and beastly skateparks you will find in all over Europe. Not least because of that, Skateboarders from all over Europe visit Wörgl year after year for a mandatory stop while crossing the Alps. So after the last part of the skatepark was being finished this year, we decided that it was finally time to unleash the concrete beast with an opening party that worships the hard work. The mixture was as easy as it could get – 2000€ cash for tricks, custom made Volcom X Wörgl X Independent truck trophies, a pigling BBQ, live music and cold austrian refreshments. We’d like to thank all of the locals and workers like Ralf Edlinger, Alex Kapfinger, Hannes Sautner, Peter Stromberger Leo Teissl, Roman Erhart that made this skatepark come to life. More over we’d like to thank Roman Astleitner as the head of this project, the Pilotto skateshop, Muckefuck Urethane, Mark Scott & Joey Martin (Dreamland Skateparks), Chet Childress, Willis Kimbel, Emil Kästle and all of the other helping hand Pictures by Theo Acworth Harry Lintell By Theo Acworth Piglings and cold ones for the peeps Pigling Victor Pellegrin controlling the DJ game Victor also handles backside floaters like a boss Victor Pellegrin smith grind Tim Rebensdorf rides the wave with his eyecatching frontside grinds Tim Rebensdorf fs tail nosegrab DIY views   Sebi Fox Sebi Fox fs smith grind Harry Lintell Harry Lintell Backside Flip Harrys flawless backlip David Heuberger frontside five-o   David Kirchler cruisin it Aron Prazeller Boneless   Ralf Edlinger Backtail Gregor Senfter Frontside Grind NameMissing Transfer Stjepan Lovric blasting a massive frontside air Even better with this view Santino Exenberger killed it big time in the Miniramp Marco Kada frontside flip Tim Rebensdorf frontside air hang up Tim Rebensdorf fs stiffy 360 What a beast of a DIY Park. VOLCOM RAPID JAM MUNICH
What an insane weekend we all just experienced at the Volcom Rapid Jam going down on the infamous Eisbach wave in Munich! Starting at the local surf shop Santo Loco (Eisenmannstraße 4, 80331 München) we invited the munich locals for a get together with the Volcom Surf Team including Leon Glatzer, Gony Zubizarreta, Willi Aliotti and Charly Quivront. The beers were flowing and the boys even printed some limited Volcom X Santo Loco shirts for the mob. As the motivation increased and the sun set down, we took the crowd for a walk towards the Eisbach to heat everything up for the Rapid Jam. From flames & inflatable turtles on the wave, 1000 bucks for tricks, to loads of shotgun beers and the best guys to ever surf the static wave made the perfect combo for the rad atmosphere we enjoyed. It was a huge pleasure to see such a strong scene, getting rad and pushing the energy to the next level. Special thanks to Quirin Rohleder who made all of this happen and of course to all the other sponsors and helpers such as Globe, Totally Rad!, Goldene Bar, Wolfrik „den Flammenwerfer“ Kirkflow Fischer, Toby Haseloff und natürlich die FUS Crew. Skate Invadors - GQ x Volcom
Last June, Volcom introduced a new skate sculpture in Paris, France, at Place de la Republique. The project was in collaboration with the city of Paris, Sterling Project, some of the most iconic Parisian skateboarders, and Volcom. Going further than building a functional skatepark, Sterling Project developed an aesthetic sculpture which respects the local architecture of the plaza and helps to contribute to increasing the social experience of the skateboarders and the non-skateboarders who live in the surrounding areas. The result is an impressive 40-foot-long piece of granite, concrete, and metal in the shape of a Volcom Stone to serve as a skate spot for the local skateboarding community. GQ Magazine France documented this process and gave us a moving visual eye to the storytelling. This video is the behind the scenes look at the Place de la Republique project this past June.

La Kantera Invitational 2018 Recap
Winners got decided last Saturday 23 of June under a perfect summer day at La Kantera Invitational 2018! The legendary pool of Algorta got shredded into pieces by an international field of skateboarders, and besides a few injuries and a destroyed pool ladder, the action didn’t stop. Congratulations to Jordyn Barratt (USA) who took top honors in Women division, Nicky Guerrero (Denmark) for winning the Masters division and to Vincent Matheron (France) for his first place in the Pro/Am division. On top of all the action we also celebrated Alain Goikoetxea’s 20 years with Volcom in his hometown, surprising him with a giant Volcom Stone cake and an Eagletone guitar customized by his sister and artist Naiara. The warm up day (Friday) ended with a giant Barbecue at the beach on the evening, and with the local psychedelic band Purple Vellocet playing at Sunset. With the beers flowing, the party peaked with Pizza Knife taking over the stage with a killer punk show. Jordynn Barrat won Womens division with style fs smith over the deathbox It was all about good vibes on the contest day (Saturday), the public coming in numbers as the day advanced to watch the action in the grandstand around the pool or in the grass fields surrounding playa Arrigunaga. The action continued after the prize ceremony with Woody Woodcutters and FAVX playing a live free show under a stunning sunset. Then it was time to crack more cold ones down the beach for the annual Sanjuanada celebrating the longest day of the year with fires everywhere. Thanks to Euskaltel, the city of Getxo, Confusion magazine, Thanks Skateboarding, @guretxoskatepark, Eagletone guitars, Alain Goikoetxea, Javier Mendizabal  and Etienne Pinon for judging, Naiara Goikoetxea for this year artwork drawing and the custom Eagletone Guitars trophies, Don Grego and Edu for MCing, DJ Judas for the good tunes, Daniel Pelow and his webcast crew, Marc Churchill and Dani Lozano for hosting the webcast, Vincent Coupeau and Borja from the skate club for the photos, Jeremy and Alex for the video and everyone else who made this event a success!
