Stop #7 of North American WITP Tour

Stop #7 of Volcom Stone's Wild In The Parks skate tour pushed to the home of Purple Rain and 3rd Lair Skatepark in Golden Valley, MN Sunday 21, 2013.

It has been a few years since we have had the pleasure to hold a WITP event at 3rd Lair Skatepark and Skate Shop. Over the years the owners of “Lair” have made enormous changes and improvements to this premier skate facility. When you walk in the staff greets you as you step into the newly remodeled pro shop. The shop is stocked with a solid shoe wall, a great skate hard goods selection, and proper clothing offering that now includes Volcom! When you get the chance, head over and check it out. 3rd Lair’s street course has also been revamped adding a ton of flow and has every type of feature to keep skate progression at a premium. As we looked at the park we found 3 different lines to form the 3 zones fitting WITP contest format. Zone #1 had number of ledges and the signature 3rd Lair flat bar, zone 2 boasted a large 3x3 double set with 2 hand rails and zone 3 gave the competitors options with an A-frame feature that includes both rails and hubba ledges. With the zones set and the day upon us, the time was here to test the skills of the competitors that call 3rd Lair their 2nd home.

The 14 & Under Division was hot out of the gates to set the skate level ridiculously high. There was no such thing as a standard 1 trick objective as these young bucks showed they have years of skating under their belts. Henry Garland put it down with notable tricks like bs 180 nose grind to regular on the flat bar, kickflip bs lip on the A-frame rail, and fakie kickflip down the double set to show he was the alpha dog and take home the win. Not far off, Jackson Parrish was all over the park as he battled the zones with tricks like a nose slide 270 shuv, a smooth impossible lipslide on the double set rail and powered a bs crooked down the hubba ledge to lock down a respectable 2nd place finish. While all that was happening, Benny Milam provided enough to get into 3rd as he landed cab 270 bs lip on the flat bar, a bs kickflip down the double set, and a bs 270 lipslide on the A-frame rail before he broke his board trying a bs 360 kickflip (aka: blizzard flip) down the double set.

It was now time for the 15 & Over Division to take the keys and put the petal to the metal. Jake Rogers skated out of the shadows to be come a highlight as he went ham with a nollie laser flip bs boardslide on the flat bar and 360 flip lipslide on the A-frame rail to name a few. This “dark horse” took home 1st as he shined through the crowd of his skating peers. Chase Domeier was making the best of a bad situation as he skated with a separated shoulder the entire day. You could see him fighting through the pain, but it did not stop him from getting solid tricks in all 3 of the zones to place 2nd for his determination. Shalom Larson was also skating hard as he kicked flipped bs tail bs biggie out on the flat bar, bs flipped over the rail on the double set, and got some solid grinds on the A-frame to finish out the top 3 in his division.

If that was not enough to make your senses tingle, it was now time for the Open Division to make the crowd shake their heads and rub their eyes in disbelief. All of these Open Division competitors could stand atop the podium on any given day. From start to finish we saw the seemingly impossible become possible. These guys handled nollie heelflip boardslide on the double set rail, alley oop bs flip to flat over the A-frame rail, switch heelflip bs feeble on the flat bar, fakie bs feeble to regular on the flat bar, 360 spins both fs and bs over everything, 180 no-comply fakie 5-0 on the double set down rail and that is just the tip of the iceberg. It was a show for the record books and a totally awesome display of raw skateboarding talent. As time ended and scores were tallied Alec Majerus was in 1st place, Dan Coe received 2nd, and Tanner Van Vark was called up to gather his 3rd place winnings.

We want to thank Mark Rodriguez, Trog and the entire 3rd Lair park staff for hosting the 2013 WITP at their park and helping us from beginning to end. Thank you to Cory Schneider, Josh Johnson, and Andrew Leibman for handling the unbelievably difficult task of taking down scores all day. Lastly, show our tour sponsors some love for kicking in the extra stoke during the entire WITP tour:

elooa GIRLS CAMP BALANCE – Successful start for the girls!
Last weekend 20 motivated girls came to the Kitzsteinhorn for the elooa GIRLS BALANCE CAMP presented by VOLCOM. Also present were next to the elooa crew, a yoga teacher, a professional photographer as well as a filmmaker and the pro riders Mary Luggen & Ana Rumiha. After check-in the camp started with a yoga session into the weekend. Super motivated and well equipped with new Nitro Snowboards everbody went to the glacier on Saturday. After an extensive warm up and a few runs through the resort the girls practiced freestyle basics first before a perfectly shaped snowpark was waiting. Together with the coaches and the pro girls everybody practiced intensively all day and learned new tricks. In the afternoon we went back to our hotel, the Active by Leitner ́s 4* hotel that had all lot to offer: holiday galore! After coffee and cake a one hour yoga session with Anna Kathalina followed and before dinner everyone could recover in the spa area. After a very delicious and healthy dinner the day ended with an intense video coaching for all participants. On the final Sunday all campers went back to the Snowpark Kitzsteinhorn to implement the new tips of the pros and elooa coaches directly. The weather was still kind of inconsistant but we had sunshine all day. After numerous runs and a lot of new tricks in the bag an eventful weekend came to an end. The elooa crew would like to thank all participants, the sponsors, the hotel Active by Leitner ́s and the Kitzsteinhorn for an amazing camp. We are looking forward to more elooa GIRLS CAMPS in 2017. We still have a couple of spots for our GIRLS SPLITBOARD and GIRLS BACKCOUNTRY FREERIDE CAMP available. Find more infos on www.elooa.com

The weather forecasts are firing, your crew is blowing you up, and the weekend shred getaway is dialed in! Now the serious question: what are you going to pack?! Some of the biggest things that can make or break that perfect day of shredding is how you prepare for the conditions and a little knowledge into what to expect. As we all know, you aren’t going to last long nuking pow day showing up to the chairlift in just a hoodie, or getting stuck sweating it out in that heavy down jacket during warm spring conditions. Making good outerwear decisions is crucial! So, to help you out, we had a few of the Volcom Snow team riders breakdown their favorite gear to wear during their hometown weekend shred sessions! "If you were to take a trip to Les 2 Alpes in December, you know you could encounter some of the coldest days of the winter and hopefully big snow falls. The bottom of the resort is at 1600 meters and rises up to 3200 meters where some of the best off-post runs are already in good conditions. To make sure I spend a long day out, I usually pick a combo of Gore-Tex Overall and Jacket. Also, the best option if you want to go straight from the snow to the après ski is dry underwear!" - Arthur Longo Shop Arthur's Winter Weekend Essentials Stone GORE-TEX® Jacket Rain GORE-TEX® Overall Base Layer Crew Base Layer Pant SFD Powder Mitt Sweep Lined Beanie More Winter Weekend Essentials Scott Blum Bryan Iguchi Pat Moore Arthur Longo Elena Hight Marcus Kleveland Shop All Snow Outerwear

# VolcomRepublique Celebration!
Last Saturday our boys Axel Cruysberghs and Victor Pellegrin cruised to Place de La Republique in Paris with a good portion of the scene, from the local kids to national heavy hitters such as Charles Collet, Joseph Garbaccio, Ben Garcia and more. The purpose was to celebrate the return of the Volcom granite skate setup in the heart of the French capital. The sun was shining - a perfect to start the afternoon which led to a fun and busy skate session in between the regular Republique weekend folks such as activists demonstrating about Cote–D’Ivoire new government (with a solid PA blasting african rhythms) or the "Nuit Debout" activists... A bunch of tricks got landed, high fives exchanged, and some giveaways were flown to the kids, and it was time to move to the Fluctuat Nec Mergitur cafe, right in the middle of the plaza for some after session beers, music and to announce the results of #VolcomRepublique best line skate contest. Tons of prizes got awarded to some of the many entrants and top 3 got to split the 1500€ prize purse of the contest. The judge panel consisting of David ‘Tura’ Turakiewicz (A Propos Magazine), Fred ‘D’ Demard (Soma skate medicine) and Christian Vankelst (Volcom Team manager) had a tough job picking the winners and in the end Joseph Garbaccio from Le Havre took the win (and the biggest check). Glaciers opening meat and greet tour!
The Volcom gang was beyond ready for the snow season to start. So they embarked on a 4 stop mission to Glacier openings in the area with some simple goals; shred and get together with all our snowboarding friends and share some good times. Gang Partnering with long time friends Go-Shred, they started with Hintertux on October 1st, following with Kaunertal on October 8, Kitzsteinhorn on the next day then finishing up with Stubai on October 22, setting up on the parking lots with games, music and free BBQs with refreshments after each session to extend the the stoke of the first rides. We met Gigi in STUBAI Hintertux was sunny and felt so good with mellow vibes, Kaunertal was maniac with tons of shredders from all over Europe, and a miniramp was added to the parking lot setup. Fort that last one, Go Shred organized a rad shuttle service from Innnsbruck to Kaunertal including coffee, croissant and a Volcom surprise bag Kitzsteinhorn, which happens to be Volcom partner resort, was absolutely packed.. It was madness in the park, with almost as many riders hiking the park as there were on the T-bar. You can now ride mor than 1200 vertical meters.. Check Kitzsteinhorn.at for live updates Stubai Then the tour finished with the Stubai Glacier opening with a good session on the Friday, and Saturday afternoon we set up at the bottom of the new multi million € Gondola and prepared everything for the smiling guests. Volcom Zip Tech® Jacket-to-Pant System Keeps Snow Out
It's no secret, being cold and wet is the easiest way to ruin a good day on the hill. And let's face it, everyone falls down, slides out, sits on a icy/wet chairlift and so on. It is snowboarding after all, and snow is going to try to find a way up your jacket and down your pants, soaking your base layers making it difficult to regulate your body temperature and in general cause you discomfort. Which is why over a decade ago the design team at Volcom developed the innovative Zip Tech® "zip your jacket to your pants" system for Volcom Outerwear as the first line of defense in keeping your body dry and your stoke high.
