Anouck Grau is a French-Swiss snowboarder and part of the Volcom family. Outside of snowboarding, she has been involved in the making of "Ride The Wall", an exhibition representing the urban culture from every angle and mixing art to the sport through athletes, photographers and big-name artists. The first edition was held from 7th to 27th of June this past summer in Geneva, and it was a success. Since this, she’s kept busy and the magazine E-adrenaline (www.e-adrenaline.fr) just interviewed her about her latest project, an exhibition in partnership with “Art By Friends”, on showcase from September 18th at the Geneva Artspace. As the real article is in French, we’ve taken the liberty to translate it to English for all you non-French speakers.
Hi Anouck, can you tell us how did you get the idea for the next show?
After Ride The Wall I wanted to continue to host events related to art and sports. So naturally I decided to team up with Art By Friends, a platform that has shared this passion for many years. The new project “Odyssée Tour” is a traveling exhibition and Geneva is a perfect city for this show.
How can we put the snowboard forward through art?
There are so many connections between the two disciplines, with the photo and video of snowboard for example. Today the playground of snowboarders is becoming more creative: the spots, tricks… It's all an art form. And then there is also the collab between artists and snowboard brands. The explanation could be very long.
What is the message you want to convey?
Somehow I would like to improve the image that our sport has and also highlight the artistic part of it, which is sometimes hiding. Snowboarding (or skating) is not just about youth gangs who are partying, it's an investment of 150%, a fitness routine, a lot of creativity, finding spots to practice their passion. Then you also have people who want to promote values such as ecology.
Did you intend to create other events such as the Odyssée?
Yes, my head is full of ideas for future expositions planned for the first half of next year. And of course, it will have a Ride The Wall 2 and we’ll prepare something crazy.
You are known to ride street spots. What is your favorite destination to practice?
Between two expos, I try to stay in small stations around Annecy. Otherwise Tignes is great for street riding. We are a good team with the crew of the Minority or Avoriaz.
Where will you be when the snow will be back?
Between my gallery and mountains tops. We are planning a trip to Helsinki with Volcom to do some street riding.
Have you managed to cure your hip problem?
Unfortunately the pain is still there, it's tough mentally to say we did everything, and that change takes time ... I try to be fit, eat well and swim a lot (the best sport you can do when nothing else is possible to do). We'll see in the future but I would attack this winter of course!
Thank you Anouck, fingers crossed to see you on the snow as soon as possible.
