Volcom Hot Spot // Bordeaux

According to many surveys, Bordeaux’s in the top 3 favorite cities of French people. At sixty miles from the ocean, the capital of Aquitaine has retained its theatrical, secret atmosphere; it’s pride and often-rebellious nature.  Cultivated as the city is, it’s not shy of outside influences and especially Southern ones. The Spanish trend of outside areas can now be seen clearly outside most cafés and restaurants on the oh-so-many windy roads of Bordeaux. The evenings become alive in tapas bars and continue into the hot night. Our Volcom Store Manager Mathieu and his team have prepared this 24h or more hour program to help you navigate through their city.

To start the day with a few activities, or just mellow cruising, there’s two choices available for you: the Darwin hangar or the skate park of Bordeaux.

The Darwin Hangar is a result of the ambitions to bring together: artists, musicians, painters, skateboarders, all in one place... Achieving a beautiful utopia, allowing urban actors to enjoy a magical place which combines unusual projects, unique spaces and warmth. The hangar is in all simplicity an eco-designed indoor skate park, dedicated to urban culture. Thanks to the patronage of the Endowment Fund, it has gradually been converted into a hangar, largely with the help of recycled materials.

In the afternoon, you can have a ride to “Les vivres de l’art”. A space dedicated to art, mainly street art or music. The large surface area of the site allows for fragmented areas so that the space can be divided between different practices and artists.

To start the evening, A cantina, a tapas bar / restaurant from Corsica will do nicely. The place comes from a concept created some years ago in Calvi in Corsica. Imported in the early summer of 2011 to Bordeaux, A Cantina will offer traditional and modern Corsican food, all in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

You’ll have two options: the tapas bar on the ground floor and/or the traditional restaurant upstairs.

If you want a more Street Food friendly atmosphere, go to the cozy little place called Fernand Lafargue in the heart of Bordeaux, there Santosha offers inventive and exotic cuisine described as "Asian Street Food", mostly made from Asian recipes from various influences (Bali, Thailand, Indonesia, etc ...).

You can eat here or take away the very large portions. Even tea, coffee and lassis can be taken away. However, don’t arrive too late or you’ll most likely be greeted by a very long queue.

For background music, the Café Brun is the place that suits you. For several years, this traditional pub in Bordeaux has attracted a very eclectic clientele of regulars, students, revelers but also tourists and businessmen, all in a fun atmosphere. This pub bar conveys a cool but warm atmosphere thanks to its design created from objects and antique furniture.

Feeling funk and soul? Go to the Apollo. The name "Apollo" returns directly to the Apollo Theater in Harlem, NY. James Brown, the sacred monster of funk, music and African American culture. Its style, values, spirit and soul are all passed onto the people at Apollo!

For the late hours, there’s several choices available for you to continue the night.

L’entrepôt is a new concert venue opened since early September with a nice program.

On a docked ferry, iBoat unfolds on three levels: a concert venue and electro clubbing; a restaurant with creative cuisine with two terrace bars; an event and exhibition space. The place can be seen as a cultural center for electronic music and digital arts thanks to its on-point program.

If you like rock, Hereticclub is neither a trade nor a club, members of the crew who work in bars, entrances, programming, and promotion are part of the 8 million of French who are below the poverty line go here. The space was created to be a little freer, to let people live their independent scenes and alternative networks more or less all with the same motto: passion, independence & love for music.

Finally, if you start feeling hungry around sunrise, go to the “marché des Capucins”, this is the perfect spot for a good meal after all the partying.

Then last but not least – Don’t miss the Volcom Store of Bordeaux. Located on Rue St Catherine, on one of the main streets of Bordeaux. Take a ride through the Store and update your wardrobe with some of the season’s new arrivals.

Surf
Interview of Joan Duru - Qualification WT 2017
Do you have any passions or hobbies besides surfing? I like to go mountain-biking with my friends or my dad. Tasty beef ribs, some wine with my buddies or spending time with my girlfriend. On the QS Tour this year, you seems calm and relaxed with good results following, did you change something in the way you train? I didn’t make any change for a long time, and it seems that it just starts working now. I’m 100% dedicated to my work with Mayhem, a board sponsor I’m working with for 1 year now. I always had magic boards which allows me to mainly focus on the rest. Is that what we used to call “maturity“ or “gaining experience“? It’s true that priority establishment totally changed my life on the WQS. Priorities make it easier, because you can wait for the best wave without being affraid of someone who will get through to the inside at the last minute. Since, the only thing to focus on is trying not to fall down!!! You hardly work on your physical training and surf training, which obviously helped you this year, but you’ve always been one of the World best surfers, what’s up in Joan Duru’s mind? I love sport, and I feel really bad if I’m not doing anything, thus training is not a chore, but a real pleasure ! Moreover, Maud (Le Car, his girlfriend and member of the Volcom team) and a group of young frenchy surfers such as the Cloarec, Charly Quivront and Bastien, are lucky to have Charly Ducamp as personal trainer, who is actually a great coach. On the surf side, I’m working with Manu Portet for several years now. He was there to support me at all contests where I made good results, which helped me a lot!!! Tell us about your 2016 season strong moments? Starting with the second position at Balito (first WQS 10000 of the season) helped me a lot, as there were only a few primes that year. And now, I’m glad and more than happy that I made a semi-final at Haleiwa despite the pressure of the qualification, but the good waves made it amazing. How would you feel when you’ll officially be on the Tour? Satisfied or feeling that something even stronger has just started? I feel really excited, but I’m aware of the very high level, thus I will have to train harder physically and technically, so that I can hope to face and beat the World Best Surfers. When seeing some guys such as Julian Wilson who had to come back to qualify for the QS last year, it shows the huge level. What are your ambitions on the Tour? Be qualified again for the CT would be amazing. Without waffle, what’s your objective? Quarters on the first contests, it would be epic to kick off the year. What are your plans to get ready for this new life? I’ll spend winter in France to train hard, spend time with my girlfriend, my family, and my mates. I have to get ready for the upcoming year, cause it’s going to be a long tough year, with many contests. I’m lucky to have Maud by my side in Australia, and I really hope my family will be able to come over one or two contests to fully enjoy it. You’ve been really well welcomed by the public during the Pro France and Lacanau, can you tell us how the relationship with the french audience is that special? Cause we’re equal I guess. Timing issue : The Olympic Games? How do you feel about it? You’re still young and will obviously be a contender to be a member of the French Team. Do you fancy doing it? Yes, it’s my dream, I’ll work as hard as I can to make it happen. How are you going to celebrate this event? Any special thanks? A word to spread? I think we’ll have to rent a room to gather all my friends and family to celebrate. I want to thank all the people that supported me, my girlfriend Maud, my family, my friends, and all my sponsors (Volcom, Vans, Mahyem, Creatures of Leisures, Hercules) who never stopped to believe in me for all these years, and let’s celebrate now!!!

After check-in the camp started with a yoga session into the weekend. Super motivated and well equipped with new Nitro Snowboards everbody went to the glacier on Saturday. # VolcomRepublique Celebration!
Last Saturday our boys Axel Cruysberghs and Victor Pellegrin cruised to Place de La Republique in Paris with a good portion of the scene, from the local kids to national heavy hitters such as Charles Collet, Joseph Garbaccio, Ben Garcia and more. The purpose was to celebrate the return of the Volcom granite skate setup in the heart of the French capital. The sun was shining - a perfect to start the afternoon which led to a fun and busy skate session in between the regular Republique weekend folks such as activists demonstrating about Cote–D’Ivoire new government (with a solid PA blasting african rhythms) or the "Nuit Debout" activists... A bunch of tricks got landed, high fives exchanged, and some giveaways were flown to the kids, and it was time to move to the Fluctuat Nec Mergitur cafe, right in the middle of the plaza for some after session beers, music and to announce the results of #VolcomRepublique best line skate contest. Tons of prizes got awarded to some of the many entrants and top 3 got to split the 1500€ prize purse of the contest. The judge panel consisting of David ‘Tura’ Turakiewicz (A Propos Magazine), Fred ‘D’ Demard (Soma skate medicine) and Christian Vankelst (Volcom Team manager) had a tough job picking the winners and in the end Joseph Garbaccio from Le Havre took the win (and the biggest check). The weather forecasts are firing, your crew is blowing you up, and the weekend shred getaway is dialed in! Now the serious question: what are you going to pack?! Some of the biggest things that can make or break that perfect day of shredding is how you prepare for the conditions and a little knowledge into what to expect. As we all know, you aren’t going to last long nuking pow day showing up to the chairlift in just a hoodie, or getting stuck sweating it out in that heavy down jacket during warm spring conditions. Making good outerwear decisions is crucial! So, to help you out, we had a few of the Volcom Snow Team riders breakdown their favorite gear to wear during their hometown weekend shred sessions! "When planning a trip to Mammoth, CA in November, you can expect conditions to range from sunny and perfect to puking powder. My go-to outerwear set up is a hooded sweatshirt with a flannel or windbreaker, but I always keep a good warm / waterproof jacket close by for the cold mornings and surprise powder days."- Scott Blum   Shop Blum's Winter Weekend Essentials     Simons Insulated Flannel Jacket JLA Stone Zip Fleece Alternate Jacket Freakin Snow Chino Base RPET Crew Base Layer Pant Sweep Beanie Stay Dry Mitt   More Winter Weekend Essentials     Scott Blum Bryan Iguchi Pat Moore Arthur Longo Elena Hight Marcus Kleveland Shop All Snow Outerwear

Volcom Zip Tech® Jacket-to-Pant System Keeps Snow Out
It's no secret, being cold and wet is the easiest way to ruin a good day on the hill. And let's face it, everyone falls down, slides out, sits on a icy/wet chairlift and so on. It is snowboarding after all, and snow is going to try to find a way up your jacket and down your pants, soaking your base layers making it difficult to regulate your body temperature and in general cause you discomfort. Which is why over a decade ago the design team at Volcom developed the innovative Zip Tech® "zip your jacket to your pants" system for Volcom Outerwear as the first line of defense in keeping your body dry and your stoke high.
