Volcom Surf hits San Sebastian, Hossegor & Paris on the final leg of Euro Thrash

Words and photos by Volcom staff photographer, Tom Carey. Check out additional Euro Thrash coverage from our friends Wasted Talent and Surfline who joined us on the trip.

France seemed like a good break from the fast-paced lifestyle we were living in Portugal. However, we put the well-oiled machine into overdrive and kicked up the whole program a notch. It was Friday night and we couldn't bare the thought of not going out in Hossegor. Half the crew live there throughout the year so they were happy to be home, see some friends and have a few pints at their local watering hole. That was night #1.

Night #2 meant heading to Spain. San Sebastian to be exact. For anyone that doesn't know, San Seb is one of the most amazing towns you could ever visit with its narrow streets, killer bars and amazing tapas. The food alone is worth venturing over for. We visited a few shops, mainly Pukas, which is the biggest surf shop in Spain and then tore the city up. It was hard keeping everybody together when you’re rolling so deep. We had two rooms at separate hostels, but still somehow we managed to only sleep six people in beds. Others slept in their cars, a few on the ground and then others didn't sleep at all. It was quite the site when we all reconvened the next morning. We didn't let a little hangover stop us from enjoying some breakfast tapas and some delightful cider.

The party continued on night #3 back over the border to Hossegor once again. By then we were feeling it. Giraffes (giant tubes of beer) were going down too quickly and I knew there couldn't be a happy ending to this weekend. The next day was going to be full of fear. And we weren't far off. The Volcom house looked like a bomb went off. We had been going strong for over a week now and a day off was much needed. So we rested, packed our bags and got ready for our journey the following day to Paris where we would end the trip.

It was Semana Santa (Easter) and flights were full and expensive so we decided to jump on the train instead. There's not a better way to experience and view the French countryside than by rail. Beautiful, vibrant hills were covered in the brightest yellow wildflowers and sprinkled with giant windmills. It was beautiful.

Paris greeted us with open arms. We didn't arrive until 8pm, but the night was young. Restaurants cook until 11pm, which is great. Bars stay open until the wee hours (which is also great). We saved the best meal for last and sampled all the exquisite cuisine Paris had to offer. We woke up a little fuzzy, but had enough in the tank for one last night. After visiting a few shops and then putting a few pints back, we went to check out a concert nearby put on by one of the presidential candidates. It was raging. The cops were in full force and dressed like RoboCop riot gear. Feeling a little uneasy, we didn't stay long as the large crowds were a bit overwhelming. So we stumbled upon a Korean BBQ joint that looked like it could accommodate the 10 of us. We ate like kings trying to forget that we were leaving the next morning.

We had all became great friends by the end of the trip. And as the clock ticked, we knew this memorable trip had to come to an end. We finished out the night at a heavy metal bar. There are always good people at metal bars. They are the salt of the earth. We said our goodbyes that night, shed a few tears and made promises to come back and see each other soon. Farewell for now...

We had uber small waves in France but the bank was amazing. 200 yard lefts but waist high. Burch made it look so fun on his twinny.

We opted to take the train into Paris from Bordeaux. What a good call that was. The French countryside is so beautiful and teeming with colors.

The forests around Hossegor are so lush. We went to check out this old Russian campground. It was straight out of a horror movie. But gorgeous.

We had the meanest barbecue at the Volcom house in Hossegor. It was a sausage fest or sorts with some duck thrown in. Willy was not impressed with Charly’s.

The presidential elections led to some large crowds and lots of cops. I wasn't too comfortable and sure enough the day we left a few cops got shot near our hotel. Pretty heave stuff.

Volcom Skate Team’s Favorite Pieces from the Holiday 2017 Collection
Abandoned pools, rent-a-cops, real cops and more fences than we ever cared to deal with! For the release of our Holiday 2017 Collection, we grabbed a few of our skate dudes and asked them to pick out their favorite pieces. CJ Collins, Dane Burman, Milton Martinez, and Alec Majerus each handpicked their go-tos and we headed off to some skate spots to film them in the gear. Dive in below to watch these mini edits and explore the Holiday '17 Collection. CJ COLLINS We met up with CJ and legendary Steve "Salba" Alba to check out a couple of Salba's secret backyard pools scattered throughout the inland empire. The first pool was small and steep, but CJ is so small that he had no problem putting down some difficult tricks. In the last pool we visited, there was a massive love seat that seemed daunting to say the least. Our anticipation would have been much higher, but with someone like CJ who can spring his way over almost anything, he had no trouble boosting a backside ollie over it. Salba joined in on the action and was seriously impressed with what he saw go down throughout the day. After the two exhausted themselves trying to master the deep end, the crew packed up and had a rewarding early dinner at none other than Chilis. Frickin Modern Chino CJ Collins, grom trash duty DANE BURMAN We picked up Dane at Black Box Distribution in San Diego (where he's currently living on the couch), and kicked around spots to check out. We were trying to film a trick a few weeks with him before the second Wanderlodge trip, and he got hurt, so this session was his first time back. The first spot we found was a gap to rail, but we got kicked out so we decided to come back later when the place was closed. We drove around for awhile and checked out more spots, but they were either too big or there was another obstacle in our way. Eventually, we made it to a school where there were a few solid handrails, but fences plagued the areas so we moved on. He hopped a fence and found these cool trees that he could ollie through, but thought the gap was too long. Luckily, there was a grate in front of one that he could prop up with a skateboard and launch off of. He attempted the tree ollie a few times, but came up short. He was motivated to conquer the trick, so he kept trying, again and again, and even with the tight squeeze between the branches, he ended up stomping the trick with ease just before we were to head off to another spot. Frickin Regular Chino Pants Dane Burman strategizing his tree ollie MILTON MARTINEZ Milton wanted to skate the first spot we found because he said he wanted to "go fast and fly." Alex, part of the Volcom crew, brought his Harley to tow him in to a huge gap jump, but we ended up having the cops called on us and Milton couldn't get the trick down before we got told to leave. Although, he did get a kickflip melon pretty quick while the cops were in route. That spot was fun, but illegal, so we went to another spot Milton could get towed in to by the Harley. The route to tow in at this new spot was narrow and not really enough room to completely stop, so he had to ride through the grass to make it work. Milton ollied off the bump all the way to the street in under an hour, and when we were filming all the b-roll stuff, Alex caught a patch of soft grass and crashed his motorcycle. Luckily, he wasn't hurt and his bike wasn't too busted, so we ended up fitting it in the back of the van and headed out. Kneon Nights T-shirt Milton Martinez taking a breather ALEC MAJERUS We rolled up on a spot w/ Alec, saw some huge stairs, and knew someone had to do it, and that someone was Alec. The photographer, Swainston, wasn't too familiar with Alec, so he wasn't expecting anything gnarly, but that's exactly what he got. When he realized Alec was going for an ally-oop backside flip over the stair rail, he knew he had to buckle down and be ready to nail the shot. Alec took some beatings, but kept a determined and motivated vibe alive. He nailed it, and so did Swanston. Frickin Modern Chino Pants Alec eyeing up a rail

LONGO, HAAKONSEN AND FRIENDS IN OLIVIER GITTLER’S INTROSPECTION
OLIVIER IS A MAN OF MANY TALENTS. AT RIDING HIS SNOWBOARD, FILMING, EDITING, MAKING MUSIC, OR CELEBRATING LIFE, HE CONSTANTLY EXCELS. Oh, Oli's also the reigning Quarter Pipe World Champion, although he'll never admit to it. It’s no secret that a 30-second Instagram clip is usually a condensed version of a week-long trip around the world to document a specific goal. Whether it's a trick for a video part, a photo for the mags, field testing product, or any other reason to chase a winter storm. But, what about all the shenanigans in between? From airplanes to rental cars, hotel rooms to summits, and everything in between, sometimes the moments that define these trips are caught in-between takes. Volcom ambassador Olivier Gittler, with his strong appreciation for behind-the-scenes footage, put together this unique look at a season untold with Arthur Longo, Terje Haakonsen and friends.  "IT’S WHAT WE LOVE TO DO. ALL THE THINGS THAT HAPPEN WHEN WE TRAVEL FOR SNOWBOARDING. THE SPONTANEOUS PART OF TRAVELING AROUND THAT NO ONE ELSE SEES." – OLIVIER GITTLER Oli double exposure photo by Adailton Oli Mike and Jeff shot by Vernon Deck Oli Mike and Jeff shot by Vernon Deck music recording setup iphone Oli and Arthur iphone Oli close up shot by Arthur Oli forest iphone Oli Mt Blanc iphone Oli photo by Adailton Oli setup iphone Oli shot by Longo - Crater Lake Super 8 Paulina Lake iphone
